Play’n GO is a gaming entertainment supplier for the casino industry. The brand pioneered casino games for mobile phones in the pre-smartphone era of the early 00s and has built up a portfolio of over 400 games. With one of their popular games approaching its 10th anniversary, Play’n GO contacted Playwell Bricks to commission a custom-designed brick set to mark the occasion.
Rich Wilde and the Book of the Dead
Playwell’s contact at Play’n GO explained that they were creating the campaign to celebrate the anniversary of Rich Wilde. He first appeared in Rich Wilde and the Book of the Dead, a game that falls into the archaeology/explorer niche. Think rich tombs, rugged adventurer, and of course, the Book of the Dead.
The client wanted to know what was possible to create in this sphere, given that they are in the casino industry, which can come with restrictions. One of these restrictions is that brand-name bricks, and especially minifigs, would not be possible. Instead, the Playwell team suggested a brick-built character, showing them some of Playwell’s designs, such as Optoman and the Proximus superhero set.
The client liked that idea, suggesting that Playwell design a Rich Wilde set where he’s holding the Book of the Dead.
Rich in Bricks
The Playwell Bricks designer pored over the photos and videos the client shared to familiarize himself with the character and started building. Originally, this character was designed holding a torch and the Book of the Dead, but the Play’n GO team decided to keep the focus on the Book and the torch was discarded.
The Playwell graphics team created decals of Rich’s face and the Book of the Dead from the game, as well as Play’n GO’s logo for the base and another with Rich Wilde’s name.
Once the final concept was approved, Playwell Bricks began producing and bulk manufacturing of this custom Rich Wilde set. In addition to being included in a special Rich Wilde collection prize for game users, Play’n GO listed this custom-designed set for sale in their online shop.
