After seeing the Google Mech set that Playwell Bricks designed, laser optic manufacturer OPTOMAN knew they wanted a similar brick set for a client Christmas gift. They already had a superhero character embedded into their brand story: OPTOMAN.
Lasers and Superheroes
According to OPTOMAN lore (their website), OPTOMAN is “a Super-Optics Hero who designs, develops, and manufactures high-power and longevity Ion Beam Sputtered (IBS) laser optics.” He is one of seven heroes in the Superhero League of OPTOMAN’s global partners in the laser industry.
It’s a fun and engaging marketing strategy that Playwell Bricks is proud to bring into brick form.
Designing the OPTOMAN
Playwell’s contact at OPTOMAN provided the team with .pdf files of the superhero to familiarize the designers with their superhero. The original concept was created by Shimon Bogomolov, but Eric Dubois Yang took over the project when an error on Playwell’s part required a rush redesign in order to meet OPTOMAN’s delivery deadline.
OPTOMAN requested that the brick superhero have a classic minifigure face, which presented a small challenge, as the superhero’s brick-built face was larger than a minifigure’s. Playwell Bricks’ graphic designer Kostik Poloskin made this happen by designing a decal with this classic expression, to partner with the OPTOMAN logo decal on his chest.
In his hand, OPTOMAN holds the laser mirror he uses to blast virus cells in the OPTOMAN comic strips, and he’s accompanied by a laboratory stand stylized from an image in the same.
The final design step to bring this project to completion was the Build Instructions, and OPTOMAN was ready with the perfect title: OPTOMAN – Your Hero for High Power Laser Optics. These sets then shifted into production, delivery, and arrived on time and ready to turn OPTOMAN’s recipients into super-clients.
