Tuscaloosa Academy is a private school for students in kindergarten through grade 12 in the state of Alabama, U.S.A. The Academy was readying to break ground on a new athletic center when they contacted Playwell Bricks.
Designing an Athletic Facility
Playwell’s contact at Tuscaloosa Academy explained that they were hoping to commission a small, custom brick set of their new athletic center. Something that would make the students feel a connection to the new building, as well as more comfortable with the construction activities on campus.
It was the size restriction that attracted Playwell Bricks designer Tim Howell to this project. Turns out that’s just the kind of challenge he was looking for. “The main challenge was that the budget called for a low part count, but the building to be represented was somewhat monumental,” explained Tim. “After going through a few options, I settled on a solution that used a few large parts to mimic the building’s façade and entry.”
The client requested a few tweaks to Tim’s original design, and soon, this custom Playwell Bricks set was approved and moving to production.

The crew at Tuscaloosa Academy shared the content that they wanted to be embedded in the set’s Build Instructions, which revealed the true meaning of the gift they were giving their students: “As you snap each brick together, imagine the real building being built on our campus. Every brick you place is just like the real work happening at TA. It is one piece at a time, all working together to build something awesome.”
By encouraging the students in this way, the kids are already establishing a sense of familiarity with the new structure, the building process, and an understanding of the need for the temporary disruption on campus. Not to mention getting them daydreaming of the sports events that will be held in the new facility once it opens.
