M. Y. Sans Skyflakes is a leading cracker brand in the Philippines and beloved of Filipinos across the world. When the team at Skyflakes wanted to create a custom gift that reflected their brand and culture, they reached out to Playwell Bricks to commission a custom set.
A Pairing of Cultural Icons
Initially, the client wanted Playwell Bricks to recreate their product in bricks, but after some internal consideration, they came up with a new plan: a custom Skyflakes Jeepney set.
With this new idea, the client paired two icons of Filipino culture: the crackers and the popular means of transportation in the Philippines. Jeepneys, unlike the more Western models of jeeps, are known for their crowded, sideways seating and creative décor.
The client explained that they wanted their custom jeepney to be created in the Skyflakes colours, and their logo be displayed on the sides of the brick jeepney.
Designing the Jeepney
Playwell Bricks team member Eric Dubois Yang was delighted to design such a fun and unusual vehicle. The client liked the first concept, but requested that Eric give the front of the vehicle a boxier shape. To illustrate their idea, the client shared an image they’d found of a brick jeepney.
The Playwell Bricks team was happy to have the visual, but was careful to explain that the set in the photo would be at least 300 pieces, while the Skyflakes part budget was 75 pieces. It would not be possible for the smaller version to have as much detail.
Eric produced a new concept, incorporating a boxier front end, tweaking the design until the client was happy with their set. The Playwell graphics team recreated the Skyflakes as a decal to be attached to the sides of the jeepney and sent the completed set to the client for final approvals.
Once the client gave the okay, this iconic, custom Skyflakes jeepney set moved into production and delivery.
