Life sciences company New England Biolabs discovers and produces the enzymes used in molecular biology. Chances are, if your lab is into cutting-edge research, New England Biolab’s butterfly logo is a familiar sight. The company also has a tradition of giving out brick sets related to their work.
A MODULAR LABORATORY
In 2024, when New England Biolabs Canada turned 50, the company commissioned a custom Playwell Bricks set of a modern laboratory to celebrate. You can view that set here. This year, New England Biolabs returned to commission another set, displaying updated products and a new scene.
The important elements, the client explained, were to include a lab refrigerator and a lab bench. As these were elements that weren’t included in the first set, this would create a natural extension of the laboratory workspace. The client also requested that Playwell make these sets modular; that this set should have a way to physically connect to that first set, and also leave open the possibility to add more in the future.
MAKING IT HAPPEN
Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang was happy to oblige. “The door and the pin on the side provide a nice extension potential to the original lab set,” he explains, showing not one, but three different ways that this new set can connect to the first using axle pieces. The set can connect to either side of the original as well as a third position by placing it at a 90-degree to the first.
Eric worked closely with the client, using their feedback to get the lab bench as they wanted it. “How to get that logo stickered on the bench was key,” Eric explains. Kostik Poloskin of the Playwell graphics team took great care to reproduce that logo in miniature.
Kostik also reproduced the multiple sides of New England Biolab’s branded boxes, including product labels, to fill the shelves of this brick lab. After the addition of a lab worker minifig, this custom-designed set was ready for bulk manufacturing and shipping.
