McClone was turning 50, an anniversary they were eager to celebrate. When they arrived for their discovery call with Playwell Bricks, they already knew what they wanted: a parking garage. While McClone got their start building bridges and have over 1300 structures to their name, parking garages had become something of a specialty. But they didn’t want just any parking garage. After all, McClone builds parking garages, so rather than completed garage, why not commission that was under construction, highlighting the forms and methods McClone Construction uses in their work?
DESIGNING THE GARAGE
McClone shared images and information with Playwell Bricks, pointing out the structures they most wanted to see represented in the final design. Budget and parts count gave Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang the limitations of the set and he got to work.
“I did try to first see how many floors we could get with the budget before scaling, so I knew I’d done the maximum.” Eric added a golden 50 to the front of the garage, and the graphics team created designed printed bricks with the McClone logo for the “1x3 bricks that represent abstract cars. Cute!”
Eric used “red beams to recreate their special construction techniques, as it’s one of the things we try a few times, to get full approval from the client, to ensure that it’s structurally feasible while also resembling the source,” he explains.
CONSTRUCTION WORKER
In addition to the garage itself, McClone also requested a minifigure construction worker in a safety vest and hardhat with the McClone Construction logo on it. While the minifig hard hats are tiny to work with, Playwell Bricks has worked out these logistics on other projects and the team was happy to use that expertise on this project as well.
