Matrix NDI is in the IT business, future-proofing businesses with the cables and infrastructure required to keep up with ever-evolving technologies. Some of their team had seen other companies give away custom brick sets and were impressed by them, so when the time came to start brainstorming a client appreciation gift for the winter holidays, they suggested commissioning a custom Playwell Bricks set.
Cabling Matters
When Playwell’s contact at Matrix NDI came to their discovery call, they weren’t entirely sure what they wanted. They were considering a van, or some server racking like the ones Playwell Bricks designed for NetApp. “Cabling is really our bread and butter,” they explained. “We’d like to see that represented in this set.”
As options were discussed, the client quickly began leaning toward the idea of a custom server set. “Is there a way to represent the cabling, with a decal or otherwise?” This question was put to Playwell Bricks designer Petrus Gartler, who started mocking up a concept right away.
Designing the Rack
“Never judge a book by its cover,” Petrus recalls. “I used the previous design as a base, expecting that I would just tweak it a bit to fit the client’s requirements, but I ended up redesigning almost the whole model internally. The specific details on the front that the client requested had a large impact on the internals of the model.
“Even if two models look mostly the same from the outside, they may need a completely different approach to achieve the desired look,” he concludes.
Once Petrus’ design was approved, Playwell Bricks began to bulk manufacture Matrix NDI’s order of 500 sets. Meanwhile, the Playwell graphics team created the Build Instructions, embedding Matrix NDI’s marketing messages within to add an extra layer of meaning and purpose to this custom Playwell Bricks set.
