Malvern Panalytical is a scientific instrument manufacturer that provides and develops software for materials characterization (how scientists and engineers measure, test, and understand the properties of substances). A representative from Malvern Panalytical reached out to Playwell Bricks because they were interested in creating custom sets of some of their products.

During their discovery call, the client explained that they wanted to commission a custom Playwell Bricks set of their Mastersizer product to give away at tradeshow events.

“The Mastersizer uses carefully aligned optics and controlled dispersion pathways… to capture scattering patterns with exceptional sensitivity.” They felt that this process closely aligns with the building processes of bricks and wanted to highlight that somehow.

Of course, the best way to do this would be to include content within the Build Instructions, where their recipients would read Malvern Panalytical’s messages as they build their set.

Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang took the time to research the function and use of the Mastersizer before he delivered the first concept. “I thought that the laser could be quite easily implemented, and I wanted to give it a go without increasing the parts count, as it would also allow me to organize that way the structure comes together,” he recalls. 

“The Mastersizer has two open-able hatches, showing the two modes of laser function it provides,” he adds with pride. 

In the meantime, the client shared the content they wanted to see in the Build Instructions, and the Playwell graphics team set about making that happen. 

This project was not without hitches. During production, a team member pointed out that the tubes used to connect the larger unit to the smaller were too stiff, causing the smaller to be held up and appear to float in the air. Oh dear, that didn’t represent the client’s well at all. The Playwell Avengers assembled at once, replacing the stiff tubing with one that didn’t cause any unpatented levitation before the sets shipped out.
