99.1 Joy FM is one part of a series of three religious-themed radio stations in St. Louis, Missouri (U.S.A.). When the Joy FM team was planning their annual Christmas party, they began searching for a Christmas gift that would appeal to all members of their team across the stations. That’s when they contacted Playwell Bricks and set up a discovery call.

“Our stations are very different,” explained the client, urging the Playwell team to focus on the city of St. Louis as the subject for the build. The St. Louis Arch (Gateway to the West), the blue river, and the big sky were essential elements they would like to see included.

The team at Joy FM also wanted their gift to be something attractive that their employees would want to look at and display on their desk. Rather than functional, they preferred a custom set that was decorative.

Playwell Bricks’ team member Eric Dubois Yang designed this set for Joy FM. “It’s kinda fun to do microscale every once in a while!” he says as he recalls his process. “I decided to do the big wall that depicts the sky because the client told me that the blue is important, along with the river.

“If you look closely, you can see that the river and the sky frames the city,” Eric explains. “I originally had planned to make a rectangular background for the sky, but then I thought to myself, if the shape echoes the arch, it would make the arch have a magical dimension to it as if it were a portal (as it’s the centerpiece of the set).”

The white, rectangular brick on the river offered the perfect spot to place each of the radio stations' logos as decals, completing this custom holiday gift that Playwell Bricks hopes delights Joy FM’s employees for years to come.
