99.1 Joy FM is one part of a series of three religious radio stations in St. Louis, Missouri (U.S.A.). While each of these stations has a different focus, they are owned by Gateway Creative Broadcasting, Inc., a nonprofit organization founded in 1997 that serves the St. Louis metro area.

The Joy FM team contacted Playwell Bricks in search of a gift for their employees that could be given out at their annual Christmas party. “Our stations are very different,” explained the client, urging the Playwell team to focus on the city of St. Louis as the subject for the build.

Including the St. Louis Arch, signifying the Gateway to the West, would both ground this set in the city, while also alluding to Gateway Creative Broadcasting, Inc.

It was also important to the client that this set be something “purely decorative” their team members would be pleased to display on their work desks.

Playwell Bricks’ team member Eric Dubois Yang took on the design for this set. “I decided to do the big wall that depicts the sky because the client told me that the blue is important, along with the river,” he explained.

“If you look closely, you can see that the river and the sky frames the city,” Eric went on. “I originally had planned to make a rectangular background for the sky, but then I thought to myself, if the shape echoes the arch, it would make the arch have a magical dimension to it as if it were a portal (as it’s the centerpiece of the set).”
