With conference season coming up, along with the launch of new branding, Inbox Monster came to Playwell Bricks with a monsterific idea. They wanted an activity that could double as a conference gift, something fun that would also engage what they describe as a very tight-knit community.

WHAT INBOX MONSTER WANTED
Inbox Monster took the time to detail the preferences and style of the email community that they wanted to engage, as well as the monsters that had become their unofficial brand mascot. They’d already begun building this branding with their team through a series of activities that led them to discover just how much personality a person could give their monsters. This was definitely something they wanted reflected in their final design.
Before their discovery call, our Inbox Monster contact had also gone through our website and were drawn to the idea of a three-in-one set like the one Playwell Bricks designed for Klaviyo. Was there a way to do something like this for Inbox Monster’s monsties?
HOW PLAYWELL BRICKS CREATED IT
Playwell Bricks designer Pedro Lara got started on the design right away, mocking up a brick version of the monster with stickers to offer different facial expressions and accessories to wear on its head. After a little back-and-forth, Inbox Monster and Pedro worked out the best accessories, replacing one here, adjusting another there, before moving on to the next step.
“This set has several accessories that were made to be removable and fit right in the top of the head,” Pedro explains. “So it’s not only a fun display piece, but has a lot of personality.”
One particular design issue still remained. Because of the nature of brick builds, some distortion is inevitable, especially at smaller scales. But the client wasn’t 100% sure the monster was representative of their brand, and that wouldn’t do.
Pedro tweaked the ears to see if that might help. Ultimately, what made the difference was adding the envelope and making it so the monster, with whichever accessories the builder might have chosen, slotted neatly inside, peering out at the viewer. “This design looks wonderful!” the client told us. “Designs approved!”
WHAT THE INSTRUCTIONS SAID
Inbox Monster knew that there was further marketing potential in the build instructions, adding this adorable note, “Hailing from the digital labs of Inbox Monster, Monstie was designed to be the ultimate email guru. Fascinated by every aspect of email marketing, from creative rendering to reputation monitoring, Monstie took it upon himself to learn everything there is to know in order to triumph over the ever-looming sending scaries. In this [brick] form, he hopes to serve as a desktop reminder that you are not alone in your email geekiness. In fact-he encourages you to engage in the email community and find your rawr.”
That’s just branding gold, especially since they also encouraged builders to share their monsties on social media.
