Designed for Detechtion and Waukesha, this custom Playwell Bricks project celebrates the new product that this partnership brought to life. SkidIQ is an intelligent platform for the natural gas industry that reads compressor and engine fault codes and helps troubleshoot issues, allowing operators to prevent downtime and get their equipment back up and running faster.

TWO SETS FOR THE TRADESHOW
For the tradeshow debut of SkidIQ, Detechtion knew exactly what they wanted. First, a large, brick model of the compressor skid, showing the Waukesha engine and a minifig operator reading Detechtion’s software panel. This set would be designed, built, and glued together by the Playwell team.
The second set would be a significantly smaller model (128 parts compared to 842) of the unit, to be given away at the same tradeshow. Not only would potential clients get to engage with the large model, but now they would have a tangible set of their own to engage with and build later, keeping SkidIQ at the top of their minds with multiple, positive memories.
DESIGNING THE BRICK COMPRESSION SKID
Yvonne Strijbos designed both of the sets, tackling the larger model first. “I prefer adding every little detail,” she says, “but I have to stick within the project parameters. So, filtering out the details of a complex machine and leaving the overall image recognizable is sometimes challenging, but also fun. You have to find out what is essential.”
She chuckles. “I left out the fan in the first draft, but without the fan, in real life the machine would have blown up, so that was an essential part.”
Fellow Playwell Bricks designer, Paul Lavallee, previously designed a Waukesha engine for the custom Playwell Bricks Innio Waukesha project, as well as having worked with these engines in the past. He was happy to help Yvonne find references that aided the design.
Once the larger model was approved, Yvonne used her newfound familiarity with the compression skid to mock-up the smaller model’s design, which our contact at Detechtion approved right away. Team member Jared Oswald started gluing the larger model together, and the team moved into production of the smaller sets.
