Founded in 1955, CBCL Limited is an engineering and environmental consulting firm that provides design, project management, and construction management services, including specialized sectors. A representative from CBCL reached out to Playwell Bricks to see about a custom set that they could give out at trade shows.

Northern Elements

At their discovery call, the client explained that they were looking for an animal set that represented Northern Canada, where the company was engaged in multiple projects. They were thinking of a polar bear, or possibly a narwhal, as the subject of this set.

After a few prodding questions, both teams decided that they wanted something regal-looking rather than cutesie, not too big, and whichever animal they chose, it should have the CBCL logo on its side.

Narwhal for the Win

Playwell designer Eric Dubois Yang sent a few polar bear concepts that the CBCL just didn’t get excited about, so they requested he try the narwhal instead. The first narwhal concept he sent was a hit.

Now was the time to move into the details. The client requested that Eric adjust the length of the narwhal’s iconic, long tusk and make some changes to the appearance of the eyes. Once these changes were complete, the client gave their design approval, and this set moved on to its test build.

Each and every custom Playwell Bricks set has to be test built and pass what the team calls the “Jason test” after Playwell’s CEO Jason Pyett. The Jason test is when the builder gives the set a rigorous shake to make sure it holds together. The narwhal did not pass the test. Instead, it leaned too far forward on the hinge that was included to make its pose adjustable, and smashed its poor tusk into the table. Ouch!

Eric pulled together a fix, keeping the hinge for its functionality, and adding a wedge brick in front of the hinge to keep the narwhal from leaning too far and hurting itself. After another Jason test, this solution passed with a thumbs up from the local imaginary narwhal dentistry facility, and this set moved into production and delivery.
