Apartment List is an online business dedicated to matching renters with apartment and home rental listings. Their mission is to get everyone into a home they love, so when they wanted a custom Playwell Bricks set to award their top performers, they definitely wanted “home” to be a major feature.

This award, Apartment List informed Playwell Bricks, was for their very top employees. “People who have basically changed the trajectory of the company.” As such, the award was going to be very exclusive. Apartment List imagined this award as a brick house to “signify that the recipient is a builder. That they build something for our company.”

Since only a few people would receive this award in a year, Apartment List wanted to make sure that the award could still be personalized. Playwell Bricks CEO Jason Pyett assured them that the Playwell team could have a tile printed with the recipient’s name and shipped to their office as needed, so long as Apartment List kept in mind the time frame for printing and shipping.

Playwell Bricks designer Thiago Brisolla designed this set. Originally, he designed the purple house Apartment List requested as a box with the roof serving as a lid. Inside, rested a hammer, symbolizing the builder. But then, inspiration struck. He quickly redesigned the set before it was sent to the client for approval, instead incorporating the hammer as part of the roof itself. The result is a clever, clean design worthy of the honour it bestows upon the recipient.

“It was very satisfying to build,” Thiago says. “Creating the hammer as the roof of the house gave a special charm to the little build, and it’s very meaningful at the same time.”
