When the Ruskin team wanted a special gift for their engineering audience, they reached out to Playwell Bricks for a custom set of one of their Louver products.
A Louver and a Plan
During their discovery call, the client explained that their team had actually been on the receiving end of custom Playwell Bricks sets in the past. “We all keep them on our desks,” they explained, so this time, they wanted the treasured item to be one of their louvers. “People will keep it on their desk and think of us,” just like the Air Distribution Technologies, Inc. team did with those other sets.
Design Challenges
To get the ball rolling, the client sent over photographs of their louver. Playwell Bricks team member Eric Dubois Yang created the first concept design from these pictures.
“The supplier didn’t have the staircase brick I wanted to use for the blades, but had a different part that was basically half of the staircase, so I used two together. Then, we had to make sure, on the test build, that these two parts would function the same way the full one would,” Eric explained.
The part did work, but the balance was off, and the unit tipped over. Playwell Bricks team members come together to offer a solution. Once this was found, it was sent to the client for approval. The client was happy to give that approval, but mentioned that the louvers were upside down. “It’s okay. We can just flip it over,” they said.
The Playwell Bricks team realized that this would reveal the bottom of the bricks at the top, rather than the smooth top Eric intended in the design. This didn’t meet Playwell Bricks’ high standards, so Eric returned to the design.
This time, the magic happened. “I’m very proud of this design,” Eric told the team, perhaps all the more so for the care he put into it.
