Freelancing platform and global remote company Toptal was planning an internal virtual conference on the topic of communication. Toptal was no stranger to conferences and they wanted this one to focus on communication between the different levels of the Toptal community.

In addition to the conference, Toptal commissioned a custom Playwell Bricks gift set for the attendees of their conference, to be mailed in advance to have on hand for the big event. However, they weren’t entirely certain what kind of set they should commission.

“In these cases, I’ll go through an exploratory session with the client,” Playwell Bricks CEO Jason Pyett says. “I try and find out what they want out of this conference, what their goals and objectives are, what the topics are going to be about, everything.”

During the exploratory session, Toptal and Jason developed the idea of a bridge for the custom set. To best match Toptal’s brand, they determined to model a modern bridge rather than the old-fashioned sort that may first come to mind. This set would serve as a metaphorical bridge as well, allowing attendees to build a bridge of communication between Toptal’s communities.

When Jason explained that he did building workshops and had experience with building online communities, Toptal invited him to be the speaker of their bridge workshop.

The workshop “was all about how to effectively communicate and problem-solve,” Jasone explains. He had the workshop attendees build the bridge set along with him as he built onto the communication metaphor and shared his experience with keeping online communities thriving. “Things like figuring out what gets people excited and doubling down on those kind of things.”

Best of all, “they loved it!” Jason says with pride. “They thought it was amazing, wonderful.”
