The Gelman Companies was founded by Elias Gelman in 1925, and over the past century, they have literally shaped the landscape of Washington D.C. and beyond. To celebrate their 100th anniversary, the team at The Gelman Companies came to Playwell Bricks to commission a very special milestone gift for their team.
Alto Towers
One of The Gelman Companies’ first major buildings was Washington’s Alto Towers, completed in 1931. The Gelman Companies’ team decided that this building would be the subject of their custom Playwell Bricks set because it “honors the spirit of innovation and enduring commitment that has defined our company from the start.”
The Gelman Companies knew exactly what they wanted in this set and Playwell Bricks CEO and designer Jason Pyett stepped in to make sure that’s exactly what they got. When the first design concept was met with disappointment, Jason stepped in with a redesign suggestion that built on his architectural expertise. The client loved the new concept, asking for only a single change that Playwell Bricks was happy to make.
Into the Details
“With the exception of the entryway, it’s a fairly simple building,” Jason explains. The trick was representing the windows within the client’s budget, which he achieved, not through bricks, but through the use of negative space.
Once the set was approved, Playwell Bricks’ graphic designer Kostik Poloskin created a decal showcasing The Gelman Companies’ logo and centennial branding to place on the base.
But The Gelman Companies weren’t done there. They had collected newspaper clippings and old adverts for their buildings through the years, which they wanted to be placed throughout this set’s Build Instructions. Coupled with inspiring messages of what was to come, this custom Playwell Bricks provides an immersive, inspiring experience for The Gelman Companies’ team.
