Tenderfoot TV is an indie podcast studio that aims to “push the boundaries of creative storytelling.” One of their podcasts, Radio Rental, features The Office star Rainn Wilson and offers “weird, true stories from the internet people.”
The podcast has developed a loyal following, and as such, the studio offers merch to Radio Rental’s listeners, from t-shirts to a hot sauce based on a fictional commercial from their first season. What if, the people at Tenderfoot TV wondered, they had a Radio Rentals brick set to offer in their shop?
A 90s Video Store
Playwell’s contact at Tenderfoot TV brought their idea to their discovery call. They explained that the premise of Radio Rental is a 1990s video rental store. This video store is run by Terry Carnation, played by Rainn Wilson, who introduces the show’s weird tales. It’s a cult-inspired horror concept, sharing eerie stories of true crime and true-life paranormal experiences, all grounded in the Radio Rental store.
What Tenderfoot TV wanted to commission was a custom Playwell Bricks set of the Radio Rental video store, filled with Radio Rental Easter eggs and VHS memorabilia.
Enbrickification
Playwell Bricks CEO and lead designer Jason Pyett recreated this eerie video store in bricks. The walls, naturally, needed to be lined with videocassettes, represented by colourful bricks. Behind the register stands a minifigure of the mannequin featured on the podcast’s cover images, and Radio Rental t-shirts hang from the wall, ready for sale.
Of course, Terry Carnation’s beloved cat, Malachai, is on the counter, beside a bottle of Hot Tots Hot Sauce (the hot sauce for children!) and a coffee cup. Beware of cat, reads a sticker on the counter beside the nostalgic Be kind, Rewind.
