How this Custom Set Brings a Fictional Video Store to Life
Introduction
Tenderfoot TV is an indie podcast studio that aims to “push the boundaries of creative storytelling.” In the nine years since their inception, Tenderfoot TV has had over 900 million downloads and a host of successful, award-winning podcasts.
The Challenge
One of Tenderfoot TV’s podcasts is Radio Rental. This eerie, cult horror-inspired show is hosted by Rainn Wilson as the fictional video store manager Terry Carnation. The studio’s online shop offers Radio Rental merchandise to the podcast’s fans, where they can get everything from t-shirts to a hot sauce based on a fictional commercial from their first season.
That shop is the reason Tenderfoot TV came to Playwell Bricks. They had a vision of a custom brick set of the Radio Rental video store, complete with Easter eggs and 90s memorabilia, that they could offer to fans.
The Solution
It was Playwell Bricks CEO and lead designer Jason Pyett who brought this eerie video store to life. Drawing from the Radio Rentals website and his own memories of video stores, Jason lined the walls with shelves to house the videocassettes, represented by colourful bricks. Behind the register stands a minifigure of the mannequin featured on the podcast’s cover images, and Radio Rental t-shirts hang up, ready for sale.
Terry Carnation’s beloved cat Malachai is on the counter, beside a bottle of Hot Tots Hot Sauce (the hot sauce for children!) and a coffee cup. Beware of cat, reads a sticker on the counter, beside the nostalgic Be kind, Rewind.
In the meantime, Playwell Bricks’ graphic designers prepared the box to house this set to Tenderfoot TV’s specifications, Radio Rental’s unmistakable logo shining eerily on the lid.
