TASKA is a company that creates prosthetic hands. More specifically, they build reliable, waterproof prosthetic hands that are myoelectric and multi-articulating. While many prosthetics can be fragile and subject to water damage, TASKA proudly creates something more rugged and robust for outdoor and everyday use. What they wanted when they first contacted Playwell Bricks was simple: they wanted a brick version of one of their hands that people could build.
Designing the Hand
TASKA also mentioned that they’d love to be able the set in demonstrations. Using the real TASKA CX hand to build the brick version. “That would really show the fine dexterity, which is a hard thing to do.”
Of course, a brick-built hand would not have the same level of dexterity as the TASKA CX with its fine motor parts and complex engineering, so the team at TASKA took the time to point which aspects of movement mattered most. The thumb, for example, needed to be able to move in all directions, details that designer Pedro Lara to care to represent in the final build.
The buttons on the hand are represented by decals, as are the two TASKA logos on the build. The flexibility of the fingers was challenging enough that Pedro brought some of Playwell’s senior designers in to confer on the best methods and hinges. Once these were designed, Pedro adjusted the colours of the knuckles to match TASKA’s vision.
Production and Beyond
Once TASKA approved the final design, this set moved into production. TASKA also took advantage of the excellent marketing opportunities in the Build Instructions for this set, embedding their brand messaging into the experience of building.
Playwell was delighted to get this feedback from Mark Godenho, Head of Marketing at TASKA, “We’ve used them on our stands at events so people can go into the draw to win one. HUGE response. The only thing we’ve had to do is that we’ve had to add some tape on the boxes as the front sleeve tends to keep slipping and doesn’t hold its shape. Other than that, it’s been a huge hit, thank you!”
