Sysdig offers its clients cloud security, protecting them from data breaches and giving development teams the tools to “prevent, detect, and respond to cloud threats instantly.” Sysdig had recently developed a creative new cephalopod mascot named Lumin, who would serve as their team’s guide for cloud defense.
A Cephalopod Guide
In a video posted to Sysdig’s LinkedIn feed, Sysdig’s Creative Director Travis Anderson explains, “Lumin means to illuminate. Light. Illuminating the path forward in the deep, dark unknowns of cloud infrastructure… anyone in this space knows how complex cloud architecture is and how immense, how fast things are, and Lumin is to help us focus on what matters. Lumin guides us the right way, and that’s why we needed him.”
When Sysdig commissioned a custom Lumin set, the Playwell Bricks team understood how important this cephalopod was to the company. Recreating a mascot requires the designer to listen, understand the needed nuances, and keep true to the client’s vision. Playwell Bricks team member Eric Dubois Yang did just that.
As he designed this custom brick cephalopod, Eric incorporated the client’s feedback, including their desire for Lumin to be poseable. Playwell Bricks shared multiple pictures of this custom set in different positions to prove this and to allow the client to choose the best pose for the cover of this set’s build instructions and packaging.
Building the Guide
Playwell’s contact at Sysdig had a strong vision for this set’s build instructions. Designed entirely in Sysdig’s brand colours, each page also details comparisons between real-life cephalopods and what Lumin and Sysdig do for their clients.
“Lumin sees more than what’s there. Lumin detects subtle shifts in environments, surfacing threats before they become problems,” reads one example.
The instructions end when Lumin is built, but Sysdig is only just getting started. “You’ve built the guide,” they write. “Now it’s time to take the next step…”
