Playwell Bricks is proud to partner with Fayette County Public Schools on a unique and inspiring project for their STEAM Academy. Seeking a memorable and meaningful promotional item, the Academy reached out to us to create a stylized, three-dimensional custom set based on their striking phoenix logo. As a high school built around an innovative learning model, STEAM Academy offers students a dynamic alternative to traditional education. This custom set celebrates the Academy’s commitment to authentic, future-focused learning experiences.

James May was the Playwell Bricks designer tasked with bringing the logo’s mythical phoenix into three-dimensional brick life. They made quick work of the creature, employing blue fire elements on the wings and binoculars for the eyes, and earning compliments of “nice parts usage all over this design!” from the rest of the design team.

The STEAM Academy contact was equally thrilled, and, after a few tweaks to the base to allow for the Academy’s larger logo, this set shifted into production.

That’s where the team discovered that our brick supplier wouldn’t be able to supply the perch that the phoenix rests on. No big deal, its only the center of the design. Fellow designer Kostik Poloskin said it best: “OMG!”

But James quickly pivoted, coming up with not one, but two alternate perch solutions and sending them to the client to choose which one they liked best. Fresh renders were made for the STEAM packaging and another test built was done before shifting back into production. Phew!
