When POWER Engineers wanted a custom buildable brick set of their mascot, Bucky the Ram, they contacted Playwell Bricks to make it happen. They explained what they had in mind, and Playwell Bricks designer Pedro Lara started bringing Bucky to life.

Pedro’s first concept matched the table mount style that the Playwell Bricks team also used in the Mr. Beast project, and he made a study of goats to get the right look. But something wasn’t quite right to the discerning eye of our contact at POWER Engineers. “Could we try a mounting bracket presentation instead, so it could be hung on a wall?” they asked. They also revealed that they’d prefer a cute look over a realistic one (sorry, goats).

Pedro sat with that for a bit, discussing it with the team to make sure he understood the client’s vision and pivoted away from the one that he’d originally envisioned. “It was a bit challenging to get the cartoonish look they were going for,” Pedro admits.

The client suggested that rather than a biologically correct goat’s pupil, which is horizontal, rectangular, and can be off-putting if you’re not familiar with goats, it would be cuter to go with a classic, round pupil.

When they asked to soften the mouth, Pedro quickly mocked up four different versions they could choose the cutest of, including a silly mustachioed version that made both the Playwell team and the client giggle.

Once the look was established and the client happy, Pedro turned his focus to ensuring that this wall-mounted set would be structurally sound. “The head stand is very solid and works perfectly,” Pedro tells me, now that the project is complete. “Designing this in a way that the head wouldn’t fall was a challenge. Also, the entire structure, due to the force of gravity, had to stand, so I did a lot of work to balance the weight as close to the wall mount as possible. In the sense that the center of gravity is closer to the wall mount, I mean.”

Pedro held his breath as Playwell Bricks team member Norman Roldan did the test build and hung the completed, custom Bucky set on his wall by the mount. It held like a dream! The rest of the team sent well-deserved congratulations Pedro’s way as he breathed a sigh of relief.

The completed, approved custom Bucky the Ram brick set was packed up and sent to his new home with the POWER Engineers. Pedro cites teamwork for the successful completion of this challenging project. “Teamwork! We had a lot of effort as a team to design the wall stand and refine the structure,” says Pedro. “Big thanks to Playwell team member Jared Oswald for that!”
