PDQ is a rocket-fueled launch system for IT devices, helping companies blast through software deployment, patching, and system administration with remarkable speed and efficiency. When they reached out to Playwell Bricks to design an employee gift that would be a tactile reminder of their shared mission to launch innovation. The concept that took off immediately was a rocket ship that captured PDQ’s energy, innovation, and sense of fun.

PDQ knew what they wanted their set to represent, but not exactly how it should look. The rocket had to reflect the company: dynamic, approachable, and full of momentum without feeling too sleek or technical. Instead of a NASA-style model, they envisioned a pop-art style rocket that felt playful and iconic, while still incorporating PDQ’s brand identity.

The challenge was to balance this creative vision with buildability, distinct use of brand colours, and a design that employees would enjoy assembling within a reasonable parts count and production timeline.

Playwell Bricks designer Michael Clark took the lead on the project. Drawing on his past experience designing playable brick games with rockets, he began developing a build that combined simplicity, nostalgia, and PDQ’s bold colour palette.

His first prototype used technic hinges and a few unconventional pieces, but Michael wasn’t satisfied with the overall look. He reworked the design so the fuselage could be “studs up,” allowing a cleaner, more cohesive shape. PDQ provided feedback after the initial concept, suggesting darker blues and smaller fins, while also highlighting features they loved and wanted to keep.

Through this collaborative back-and-forth, the final rocket came to life: a fun, stylized build with PDQ’s brand colours cleverly worked into the exhaust flames. It was an inventive solution that perfectly captured both the company’s brand and the playful creativity of the build.

The finished PDQ rocket was a symbol of teamwork, innovation, and pride. Employees received a unique, custom set that encouraged creativity and hands-on play, offering a tactile reminder of PDQ’s “rocket-fueled” culture.

Beyond its visual appeal, the build carried deeper benefits: studies show that building with bricks reduces stress, enhances problem-solving, and stimulates creative thinking; all key skills for a tech-forward company like PDQ.
