This design was commissioned by the team at One Call, a healthcare network dedicated to improving the outcomes of workers’ compensation claims. They wanted a truly one-of-a-kind gift for a retiring CEO whose leadership had shaped the organization.

Not only will this custom Playwell Bricks set evoke memories of their time at One Call, there is also a deeper, more thoughtful layer to this special gift. The CEO has a nonverbal son, and it is through building brick sets together that they are able to bond, making this gift more than a farewell. It’s an invitation to continue building memories, one brick at a time.

Playwell designer Yvonne Strijbos took on the creative challenge of transforming the One Call headquarters into a custom bricks set. Like all custom builds, it came with its own set of design challenges, but nothing Yvonne couldn’t handle.

"My first attempt was way too big. I had to take it down a notch twice to get within the project parameters," Yvonne explains. "It was very satisfying to see that the smaller model did capture the overall 'vibe' of the building."

Despite the scale adjustments, Yvonne found ways to preserve the essence of the structure. "I employed a nice amount of SNOT (designer speak for Studs Not On Top) to get that vertical look of small high windows," Yvonne tells me.

Even with necessary simplifications, Yvonne believes the model hits the mark. "Even if you have to omit a lot of detail, you can still get a detailed model that people who know the building will instantly recognize."
