Ohio University in Ohio (U.S.A.) has had a long history since opening to students in 1809. In 1969, the original Vernon R. Alden Library opened, honouring the university’s 15th president. It was only a few short years later when construction began on the two wings of the library as it stands in 2025, making that original library structure something that would appeal to local history buffs. Which is why Ohio University Libraries commissioned a custom Playwell Bricks of that very structure.

Playwell’s contact at Ohio University Libraries explained that this set would be used as a donor gift for the Vernon R. & Marion Alden Library Endowment fund, honouring the library as it was when dedicated on May 23, 1969.

To assist with the design, Ohio University Libraries scoured their sources for photographs of the original library. It’s always a good practice, when completing construction, to take multiple shots from as many angles as possible for future custom Playwell Bricks sets. 😉

Eric Dubois Yang designed this set with care. “The main challenge was the side of the windows that has a thin layer of orange wall. I needed to make the front facade exactly 10 plates high to make a 4 stud tall side wall work,” he explains.

He goes on to say that, “I needed something that differentiates from the upper thinner windows, but that also keeps the sense of depth and the continuity in the context of the façade.” He ended up accomplishing this by “Using sideway techniques on the 1x2 grill tile elements, while using the panels as the bottom half of the windows. I’m really proud of that part of the design.”

Eric’s attention to detail paid off, as Ohio University Libraries quickly got back to the team after their sets arrived. "We unpacked the boxes yesterday and everyone is very excited about them. They look great! Thank you so much for all your help through the process!"
