The Nonprofit Paradox

The client knew exactly what she wanted: a custom set that represented the cover of The Nonprofit Paradox. “I have found that people often understand complex ideas more deeply when they build, explore, and discover through play,” she explained. The Playwell Bricks team couldn’t agree more!

“The ideas in my book are much like the brick build. Each piece contributes to a bigger picture.” When readers assemble the models, Nehal explained that she wanted it to mirror “the journey of understanding how funding, organizations, and philanthropy come together to create meaningful change.”

Designing with Balance

While the image on the book cover was straightforward, encapsulating the balance and movement in bricks took thought, skill, and care on the part of the Playwell Bricks designer. Since play was important to the client, the designer incorporated hinge pieces so the planks holding the spheres could move slightly up and down, similar to the movement of a teeter-totter.

Tricky Spheres

When it came time for the test build, a test that each and every Playwell Bricks must pass with a high grade in order to be approved, the team faced an interesting problem: none of the test builder had enough sphere pieces to complete the set. Had these dedicated brick collectors met their match?

Of course not. After some searching, a team member acquired the necessary number of spheres, and the test build was back on track. After receiving top marks in stability and smooth building experience, this set was ready to move on to the next step.

A final hurdle remained when Playwell Bricks’ supplier advised the team that there were not enough spheres in the original shade available. Fortunately, a slighter lighter version was available that still matched the book cover, so this project went ahead as schedules, arriving in DC for the author’s book events.
