Impressed by the custom Playwell Bricks set the team created for Newtown Macon’s Bibb Theatre, one of the Newtown Macon team members reached out to see if we could design a little something extra. After witnessing their coworker’s glee over the custom Bibb Theatre set, they wondered if Playwell Bricks could create a custom set of their house.
WORKING FROM PHOTOGRAPHS
They soon delivered photographs of the coworker’s house and Playwell Bricks designer Michael Clark got to work enbrickifying the house.
“In the past when I've worked from reference images from a client, or for a personal build, it is usually easy to line up the scale and proportion with the reference image in Studio, but I found the angle and perspective of the reference images challenging to work with here, given the small scale of the building!”
But, of course, no Playwell Bricks designer gives up easily. “I learned that there are many ways to get certain shapes to work that I hadn't thought of before!” Michael tells me with pride.
GREY VS BLACK
“The scale of this set was one of the smallest scales I've ever created a replica in. It was also a relatively tight parts and cost budget,” he explains.
One of the first issues was the dark grey roof on the original house. While it was possible to recreate these bricks, the grey slope pieces were significantly more expensive than the same pieces in black. Michael reached out to the client right away, asking if they’d like to use the black and thus have more in the parts budget to use on more significant areas of the house. They agreed, “meaning I could ensure the rest of the details were present, such as using grille bricks to emulate the painted wooden facade.
POINT OF PRIDE
I try to ask the designers of each set if there’s anything that they’re particularly proud of that I can highlight for them. When I ask Michael, he blushes. “Well, the designer in charge of the test build told me that they were impressed with how I created the roof windows. For those, I used the 1 x 2 inverted bracket piece in white which sits on a plate and a Technic 1 x 1 brick with hole, fitting neatly into a stud underneath!”
Very cool.
