Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps have become a common sight in residential neighbourhoods across climates, offering energy and cost savings to homeowners. When it came time to find a meaningful employee gift, a marketing representative from Mitsubishi Electric Residential reached out to Playwell Bricks to commission a custom set of their residential outdoor HVAC.

Playwell’s contact explained what they wanted, sharing photos of the brand’s product, the SMART MULTI® Outdoor Unit. This product line was expanding and this was an ideal time to show some team appreciation. They explained that they wanted this set to be a premium experience, combining a sleek look with some movement built in.

Playwell designer Eric Dubois Yang studied the photographs and set about designing the HVAC unit in bricks. He was able to capture the movement the client wanted by adding fans that could be spun by hand, but the client pointed out that the fans should include the same grate that the real-life units have.

This proved a challenge, but Eric was happy to comply. His next version included a clear, studded panel, but that wasn’t quite the right look. What if, the Playwell team considered, instead of trying to recreate the grate in bricks, they had a clear, unstudded panel printed with the design of the HVAC’s grate?

The Playwell graphics team completed the design, and a mock-up was created to show the client how the final set would appear. This version matched the client’s vision, and the team got the thumbs-up they were hoping for. With a second printed brick showcasing the Mitsubishi Electric logo, this set was ready to move into production and delivery.
