Client Concerns

A contact from Mitsubishi Electric, pleased with the companies’ experience with their custom Mitsubishi Trane sets (link) set up a discovery call with the Playwell Bricks team. They explained that they were looking for a custom set of one of their E-Series Chillers that could double as a lead magnet and an internal gift.

The client expressed some concern that this set might be too difficult for people who aren’t accustomed to building to bricks. Playwell CEO Jason Pyett assured them that creating a fun building experience was a key component to every Playwell Bricks design, even if the builder is a beginner. He made sure to pass this concern on to the designer of this project, Petrus Gartler.

Designing the Chiller

Petrus is happy to talk about his experience designing this set. “This was an interesting project because of the characteristic V-shape with rounded edges and the size they wanted. We had very good reference material (blueprints, 3D data, images) so nothing was left to our fantasy when it came to knowing what the final product should look like,” he says.

Some of the important details that make the E-Chiller an E-Chiller were lost in miniature, but the client let the team know they couldn’t be left out. To make sure these elements were present, the Playwell graphics team worked with Petrus to ensure these details were represented through printed bricks. This way the final sets would meet both Mitsubishi Electric’s part budget and their eye for detail.

“I had created a visual design, but stability and build experience were a bit of an issue,” Petrus continues. Since this was already a concern for the client, Petrus pulled out all the stops. “I did some physical mock-ups to get the stability right and [fellow Playwell Bricks team member] Jared Oswald came up with a really nice way to solve the pain points,” he explains.

The result was a set that met the client’s standards and provided a fun build for builders of all experience levels.
