Metrocare is North Texas’ biggest provider of mental health and intellectual and developmental disability care, seeing approximately 50,000 children, teens, and adults coming through their doors each year. But this year is special, because Metrocare opened their brand new Mental Health & Disability Innovation Center at Hillside.

A Commemorative Set

In their discovery call, the team at Metrocare explained that the Center was going to be their busiest mental health clinic in Dallas County. The space would offer outdoor tranquility space, specialized play equipment, and offer a space for their community-based staff to land as well.

They wanted a set of this new facility that would show off Metrocare’s pride in the new space as well as a gift for donors and key players. They’d seen brick sets for this kind of thing before and the idea stayed with them.

The Metrocare Set

Playwell Bricks CEO Jason Pyett has a soft spot for architectural sets. More than just the building metaphor, this kind of design lets him flex his design muscles and create the sleek, deceivingly simple structures he’s become known for.

The building itself offers tons of natural light, which means a lot of glass on the exterior. But this exterior is also broken by a pie-shaped wedge that serves as an outdoor terrace, adding a sense of interest to the build. This wedge was also important to the client to get just right. The first concept kept to true to scale, but that meant the terrace wasn’t very pronounced. Sometimes, in designs like this, mathematical proportions aren’t as important as capturing the feel of a building. Jason was happy to redesign the wedge and the team at Metrocare was thrilled with the final result.

From there, Playwell moved into production and completed the build instructions for Metrocare’s recipients.

Conclusion

Metrocare held its ribbon cutting ceremony on September 25th of this year (2025) and the Mental Health & Disability Innovation Center is now open, in bricks and in real life.
