2025 was a big year for LPA. Not only did the year mark their 60th anniversary, they also won the American Institute of Architects’ Architecture Firm of the Year Award, the architecture industry’s highest honour. LPA didn’t want these milestones to go unmarked, so they contacted Playwell Bricks to commission a special custom Playwell Bricks set.

To begin, LPA shared photos of the red wall design iconic to their design studios that they would like to be incorporated into the set. They were thinking of a set that would be functional as well as elegant and displayable. Could Playwell Bricks use their red wall as inspiration for a phone holder displaying their anniversary logo?

Playwell Bricks designer Jared Oswald got to work at once. In his first concept, he employed the use of a decal to replicate the slats of the red wall to keep the parts within the budget the client set. The client rejected that idea, worried that the decal might create a two-tone red that they didn’t want.

Undaunted, Jared rethought the design, coming up with a new solution. LPA cautiously requested photos of the set holding the latest models of iPhone and Android phones to be sure. Jared happily passed these along, and the team at LPA liked the concept so much, they immediately increased their order.

“The LPA Award presented a unique challenge,” Jared explains. “A functional phone stand at 60 pieces or less, while capturing the iconic red wall of LPA. I was able to capture it right at the cutoff of 60 pieces, without having to rely on decals for the red wall’s notorious slat feature. The final model allows for a phone to stand at a satisfying angle. A charging cable fits through a gap underneath, giving the model great utility.”
