Toothy the Dinosaur
The client explained that they were looking to commission a custom set of their company mascot, Toothy the dinosaur. In addition to these sets being a holiday swag gift for their team, the client explained that their team also takes part in an annual charity that means a lot to them. They’d also like to give one of these sets to their top donors.
That charity is Extra Life, a DIY fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network where groups raise money by participating in and streaming gaming marathons, campaigns, or tabletop events.
Colour Troubles
“For the Little Arms design, our original plan was to create a green dinosaur to match their logo,” explains Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang. “However, we quickly ran into manufacturing challenges, as the specific yellowish-green color is extremely uncommon and came with significant design constraints. We explored several alternative color options, but each involved some level of compromise.”
After setting up a meeting with the client to explain the issue, the client broached the idea of a making the set in a special colour that they could call a limited edition.
When he looked into the Extra Life charity, Eric had an idea. “I noticed that the event branding featured a light blue gaming controller with wings and a halo. That inspired the idea of coloring the dinosaur in the event's signature light blue while adding wings and a halo to tie it into the event's theme.”
The client loved this idea, and, as Eric pointed out, “This solved two problems at once: the light blue parts were much more readily available, and the design became more meaningful by connecting directly to the charity event rather than simply replicating the logo.”
