How this Dinosaur Became a Limited Edition
Introduction
Little Arms Studio uses its team’s experience in gamification and virtual design to create training simulations for real-world applications. From fire and rescue team training to their latest product, the Zephyr Drone Simulator, Little Arms Studios offers a safe place to train teams in what can be dangerous, complicated fields requiring multiple levels of compliances.
The Challenge
Playwell’s contact at Little Arms Studios explained that they wanted a custom-designed Playwell Bricks set of their mascot, Toothy the dinosaur. These sets were going to be a holiday gift for the team, but they also wanted to give them out as a gift to their top donors in an Extra Life fundraising event that their team takes part in.
Extra Life is a DIY fundraising arm of the Children’s Miracle Network, wherein gaming groups set up streams and participate in gaming marathons to raise money. It certainly seems like a charity a gamification studio like Little Arms could sink their teeth into.
The Solution
“We quickly ran into manufacturing challenges,” explained Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang. “The specific yellowish-green color is extremely uncommon and came with significant design constraints. We explored several alternative color options, but each involved some level of compromise.”
After setting up a meeting with the client to explain the issue, the client decided to see this as an opportunity. He suggested making the set in a special colour that they could call a limited edition, maybe something metallic or unusual.
When he looked into the Extra Life charity, Eric had an idea. “I noticed that the event branding featured a light blue gaming controller with wings and a halo. That inspired the idea of coloring the dinosaur in the event's signature light blue while adding wings and a halo to tie it into the event's theme.”
The team at Little Arms Studio loved this idea and gave Eric the okay to run with it.
The Result
With this limited-edition Extra Life set of Little Arms Studios’ Toothy the dinosaur, the client has a meaningful holiday gift for their team, as well as a thrilling prize for the top donors in their fundraiser.
