When the team at Laundrylux wanted to refresh their corporate gift portfolio, they reached out to Playwell Bricks to commission a custom building set. 

During their discovery call, the client explained that they often host small seminars for people interested in opening a laundromat business. The seminars are kept small on purpose to ensure the events are productive, but the client confided that they’d grown bored with the usual gifts and were excited to offer something fun and fresh. 

They also explained that getting a laundromat business off the ground can take years because of the permissions involved, so Laundrylux wanted to give clients something that they could hold in their hand and get excited about during that process. Their vision for this set was a custom-designed industrial washing machine to represent those future laundromats.

The client shared photos of the washing machine they wanted recreated in bricks, pointing out the important details, such as their brand’s signature triangle handle, the touchscreen, and the shape of the door on the machine. If possible, an opening door on the washer would be ideal.

Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang studied the photos the client shared and started on the design of this custom washer set. “For something that looks like it would be straightforward, it was challenging to get this design within the parts budget,” he recalls. 

With the original parts count, it simply wasn’t physically possible to have an opening door on the washing machine. To help the client understand the limitations, Eric mocked up a larger set that could feature an opening door, at a higher parts count, and sent them both to the client. Ultimately, the client decided that they would prefer to sacrifice that opening door than increase the parts budget. 

Because of the small size, the team opted for printed parts over decals. This allowed for a lifelike touchscreen, that iconic triangle on the handle, and the Electrolux branding on the washing machine itself.
