Since 1975, Jay Nolan Community Services has worked to find an alternative to institutionalization for atypical individuals. Year by year, they built onto their experience, learning what works best for the people in their care. Part of the Jay Nolan philosophy is that they are on this journey with the people they support, that they sit beside them, sharing the journey, paddling together. This value is echoed in their logo: two people in a rowboat, rowing together.

As Jay Nolan Community Services celebrates their 50th year in 2025, they knew they wanted a commemorative gift to mark such a significant milestone. But with a limited budget and such a varied, diverse crowd for recipients, how could they find something that showcased who they and how far they’ve come over the years?

Recreating the two people in the rowboat, together, in the same colour and style of the logo, was the clear choice for a custom Playwell Bricks set. Playwell Bricks CEO Jason Pyett handled the design himself. “Being atypical myself, it meant a lot to me,” Jason says.

In the final design, the rowers are the focus. “The budget was too low to use minifigures,” Jason explains, referring to the LEGO® people that are typically associated with brick sets. “So we went with brick built figures.

“In hindsight, that ended up being a great choice because the brick-built figures are more inclusive than a minifigure could be.” It speaks Jason’s care and expertise that these brick-build rowers suit this custom set better than minifigures ever could have.

Upon delivery, Jay Nolan Community Services reached out to Playwell Bricks to let Jason know, “they look fantastic! Everything looks great and everyone is so excited. All the staff want one now, haha! Thank you for everything!”
