The Hun School of Princeton is a boarding school for grades six through twelve in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. Every March, the school sends out admittance packages to newly accepted students to welcome them to the next chapter of their lives.

During their discovery call, Playwell’s contact at the Hun School explained that the theme of this year’s admittance packages was “some assembly required.” The theme is intended to illustrate how the school provides the pieces to build the students’ experience at Hun, but it’s up to the student to put them together. Bricks were a natural choice to be included in this package.

The client had two ideas for their custom Playwell Bricks set: letters spelling out H-U-N, or a set based on the Princeton red Adirondack chairs scattered over the Hun campus. The chair idea quickly took precedence, as the Adirondacks could also represent the seat waiting for the students on campus.

Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang happily admits this chair is one of his favorite designs. “The most emblematic feature of the chair is the wooden panels that form the back of it,” he explains. “Regular click hinges or sticker approaches were tested, but the brick-built approach was ultimately chosen, paired with a ball joint solution for the hinges.

“The ball joints were necessary because not only the individual planks have to separate ever so slightly like fingers, but the ones in the middle also need to be a bit more laid down. Using ball joints became a two birds/one stone situation.

“Fun fact: the grass on the side (triangles) was there to hide to red hinges of the chair, because while the real chair sits on the ground, the model needed to attach to the ground at an angle for stability. So, the green base acts as a structural component.”
