How Playwell Bricks Designed an Educational Set that Explains How the Havila Biogass Plant Works
Introduction
Norway’s Havila Biogass is an industrial plant that converts decomposing cow manure and fish waste into a biogas. Once converted, this biogas becomes a fuel that can run a vehicle or heat a house.
the challenge
Havila Biogass commissioned a custom Playwell Bricks set that could both display the exterior appearance of their plant while also teaching the builder of how the internal machinations of the plant works. Specifically, Havila Biogass “wanted the builder to discover the different processes gradually.”
THE SOLUTION
To accomplish this, Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang “divided the model into four module sections, each one containing one step of the biogas transformation.” This transformation is also chronicled on the instructions pages so the builder can learn how biogas is made, connecting with and building on each step of the build. Once one module is built, the builder also understands how it works, and how it ties into the other elements.
THE RESULT
This marriage of learning combined with tactile movement has been scientifically proven as one of the best ways for the human mind to pick up and understand complex concepts. This is how we begin learning about the world as children, and our minds have forgotten! This aspect makes this particular set a powerful teaching tool for those unfamiliar with biogas processes.
The Playwell Bricks team was not surprised to discover that Havila Biogass also sponsors their local school in the First LEGO® League, since they clearly understand the benefits of bricks for mind both young and old.
