Recreating Haffner’s First Flagship Station to Celebrate a Century

2025 marks Haffner’s 100th anniversary, which is definitely a milestone worth celebrating. In addition to the custom Haffner’s Oil Truck sets they commissioned from Playwell Bricks, Haffner’s also requested a special, much larger set for three of their partners. This set would be a custom brick design of Haffner’s First Flagship gas station, located at 3121 Merrimack Street in St. Lawrence, Massachusetts (U. S. A).
Recreating the Gas Station in Bricks
Playwell Bricks designer Petrus Gartler is happy to talk about his experience bringing this set to life. “This one was fairly straightforward,” he says. “It was interesting to find the right scale to stay within the piece count limit on one hand while also being able to represent as much detail as possible at this scale on the other.”
Petrus goes on to say that “I never did a MILS plate design before.” A MILS plate is a Modular Integrated Landscaping System plate that brick designers use when they need a stronger, more stable foundation than a builder can get from a regular plate. It’s perfect for sets with multiple buildings like this one.
Important Details
In addition to the gas station build, Haffner’s requested that the partners themselves be represented in the final build. Working from photos of what these partners would normally wear, Petrus painstakingly recreated them with a little help from the Playwell graphics team.
For the billboards and signage needed to truly represent this flagship station, Haffner’s provided the brands and placement and the Playwell graphics team created decals to be applied to the completed set. While this isn’t unusual for Playwell Bricks set, this set definitely set a record for just how many stickers were included.
