In 2021, Stink Studios approached Playwell Bricks CEO Jason Pyett to advise that they were working with Google to aid in the rebranding of what was to become the Google Bug Hunters Program. As part of this rebrand, they wanted to create ten different gift sets to represent the different aspects of Google. These gifts would be distributed to the ethical hackers who search for coding bugs in Google programs, enabling Google to ensure that its systems work and work well.

The Subject

For one of these sets, Stink Studios and Google requested a Zen garden. In the Japanese tradition, these dry gardens are used to cultivate meditation and mindfulness, but in this one, Google wanted bugs. Trouble in paradise. The very thing the Bug Hunters are meant to track down.

Designing the Garden

Jason did some research into Zen gardens to understand the most important elements for this custom set, including a building in the style of a Japanese castle, some greenery, and the rake that plays an important role in Zen garden meditation.

While Jason couldn’t put coding bugs into the garden, he still designed some insect-like bugs to represent the bugs the Bug Hunter Program is after. Three of them lurk in this otherwise serene scene, just waiting for the Bug Hunters to build and capture them.

Conclusion

Playwell Bricks is proud that this project represents the beginning of a change in Playwell’s trajectory into corporate gifting. Google has returned again and again to reorder these sets, and Playwell Bricks has never looked back, designing for brands all over the world.
