American technology corporation Google is known for its search engine, internet services, advertising, cloud computing, and hardware. One of the legends of this brand’s beginnings is that the founders made their first server rack out of LEGO® bricks, way back in 1996. Thirty years later, the brand still appreciates the possibility inherent in these classic building bricks, so when the Google Events Marketing team wanted to commission a custom swag gift, they wanted something in bricks.
YouTube Swag
Google was Playwell Bricks’ first big client and designing the Google Bug Hunter sets was definitely Playwell’s big break. Over the years, Google has returned for reorders and special gifts. When they call, Playwell answers, so when a representative from Google returned to request the iconic YouTube button as custom swag, the whole team was excited.
Designing the Button
“We tried two different sizes and two different approaches,” recalls Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang. First they went big, “but the proportions weren’t right. We actually settled for the smaller option because the bricks captured the shape better.”
He admits he was relieved when the client chose the smaller one. “I think it was the best one,” he says, and everyone designer wants it to be their best work that represents something so recognizable. “It’s more compact, which creates a far better building experience for Google’s recipients, too,” he explains.
Google Delight
The client was thrilled with the finished sets. "I wanted to send a quick thank you for all your hard work and hustle on bringing the YouTube Play Button Kits to life. They are incredible, I am so happy with how they turned out. I can promise you now that we'll need to place a re-order of these - I have never seen more people get so excited about swag,” Google Event Marketer Demi Abrams let the team know.
“I really appreciate all your help. I know the timelines were tight, but you pulled it off and I couldn't be happier. Also, the packaging is so premium."
