One of the legends of this brand’s beginnings is that the founders made their first server rack out of LEGO® bricks, way back in 1996. Thirty years later, the brand still appreciates the possibility inherent in these classic building bricks, so when the Google Events Marketing team wanted to commission a custom swag gift, they wanted something in bricks.
The Challenge
Google was Playwell Bricks’ first big client and designing the Google Bug Hunter sets was definitely Playwell’s big break. Over the years, Google has returned for reorders and special gifts. When they call, Playwell answers, so when a representative from Google returned to request the iconic YouTube button as custom swag, the whole team was excited.
The Solution
“We tried two different sizes and two different approaches,” recalls Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang. First they went big, “but the proportions weren’t right. We actually settled for the smaller option because the bricks captured the shape better.”
He admits he was relieved when the client chose the smaller one. “I think it was the best one,” he says, and everyone designer wants it to be their best work that represents something so important. “It’s more compact, which creates a far better building experience for Google’s recipients, too,” he explains.
The Result
