Advance Displays has been providing retail fixtures and displays for businesses since 1979. Lozier has been designing innovative store shelving since 1956. It’s little wonder why Advance Displays would want to celebrate their partnership.

To create a physical memento of that celebration, Advance Displays commissioned a custom designed Playwell Bricks set of Lozier’s gondola system shelving. Advance Displays “requested a gondola system consisting of a single panel and two modular shelves,” explains Playwell Bricks designer José Bañuelos.

As this set was José’s first design for Playwell Bricks, “I had to learn a lot on the go, like making the model more efficient in terms of piece count – this needed to be made with a maximum of 100 bricks, putting function over design, cost over aesthetics, and making it as simple as possible.”

The “elegance of simplicity” is something Playwell Bricks CEO Jason Pyett stresses is an important part of production design. “It’s a major shift [for designers] to move from creating a piece of art where you throw everything but the kitchen sink into your design, to designing for production.”

Advance Displays requested that the shelves in the set should attach in manner similar to the real life gondola shelving. “The main challenge,” says José, “was creating an easy way of attaching and detaching the shelves so the client could personalize their model as they wanted.”

Advance Displays wanted the back of the shelving unit remain flat, without studs. This way, there was room to place a sticker with Advance Display’s and Lozier’s logos that the Playwell Bricks graphic design team created for the space.

“The outcome was good,” José tells me with pride. “The client gave great feedback throughout the design process and was happy with the result.”
