When the Genki Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar in Wilmington, North Carolina, needed a special gift, they went with the funnest set possible: a custom Playwell Bricks set of their very own Chef Danny. Playwell Bricks took care of the rest.

When the restaurant needed a special gift, they knew it was also a chance to celebrate Chef Danny. Their social media describes this Genki sushi chef as “an artist at his craft” of creating authentic, fresh sushi and Japanese cuisine.

Playwell Bricks designer Pedro Lara must have grinned when he received the design brief: to create a Genki Sushi chef in the style of the popular Brickheadz™. Brickheadz™ are a buildable character line known for their wideset eyes, stocky presence, and key personal details that make each one unique.

“This was a fun challenge,” Pedro tells me. For the personal details, a personalized apron and sushi chef hat were the clear choice. In fact, Pedro is quite proud of that hat. “The slopes that makes the hat connects perfectly and makes for a satisfying build!” he tells me. The designer that did the test build of this set, Jared, also mentioned how satisfying it was the way the slopes come together to make the round hat.

Adding a sticker to the chef’s apron announcing him as Chef Danny take the personalization to the next level. But Pedro didn’t stop there, adding in a fish ready to be sushi-fied and a minifigure sword to act as a sushi knife. The chef is ready for the dinner rush!

Pedro tells me that this was a very simple build, “a few snot [this is designer speak for ‘studs not on top’] tricks with old bricks, nothing too special.”

Personally, I disagree. This little Genki Sushi Chef is absolutely adorable in every way and I would be delighted if I were to receive one of these little fellas as a gift. Hmm. I wonder if it’s too late to travel to North Carolina and become their best customer?
