Fayette County Public Schools’ STEAM Academy is known for its forward-thinking, student-centered approach to education. When they were seeking a promotional item that reflected both their innovative learning model and their vibrant school identity, the Academy reached out to Playwell Bricks to create a custom set based on their striking phoenix logo. Much like the mythological bird that rises from the ashes, the project became a story of resilience, adaptation, and creativity.

The Academy wanted a piece that symbolized their commitment to future-focused learning experiences. Translating a dynamic, mythical creature like the phoenix into a brick-built form posed an immediate design challenge. The figure needed to capture the energy, symbolism, and presence of the logo while also functioning as a buildable, display-worthy set.

Midway through development, another hurdle appeared: a critical brick element, the perch on which the phoenix rested, became unavailable from the supplier. Without a solution, the centerpiece of the design was in jeopardy.

Playwell Bricks designer James May led the creative process, transforming the phoenix into a three-dimensional brick sculpture. Blue flame elements on the wings and clever use of binocular pieces for the eyes brought character and vitality to the design, earning praise from the Playwell Bricks team for its creativity.

When the perch issue arose, James quickly pivoted. Instead of seeing the challenge as a setback, the team treated it as an opportunity for reinvention. Two alternative perch designs were created and presented to the Academy, ensuring client input remained central to the process. Updated renders and a fresh test build smoothed the path back into production.

The final product exceeded expectations. The custom set not only captured the myth and spirit of the phoenix but also symbolized the Academy’s mission to rise above challenges and inspire growth in students. By turning an obstacle into an opportunity for innovation, the project mirrored the very values the STEAM Academy embodies: adaptability, resilience, and creativity.
