The Department of Engineering at East Carolina University (ECU) College of Engineering and Technology celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2026. That’s 20 years of hard work and study, resulting in graduation and new careers. A milestone worth celebrating.
ENGINEERING BRICKS
Playwell’s contact at ECU explained that their department helps to plan and organize events with groups inside the university. With the College of Engineering’s 20th anniversary celebration approaching, they were searching for a gift to offer the celebrants attending one of the major anniversary events.
During their brainstorming sessions, they’d come up with the idea of a buildable brick set. “Engineers are people who build things and like to fix things, and that kind of got the ball rolling,” they explained. Once they started searching for companies that could custom design such a set, they found Playwell Bricks and scheduled their discovery call.
AN ECU PIRATE
After some deliberation, the team at ECU decided to commission a custom Playwell Bricks set of the ECU pirate in ECU’s school colours, purple and gold. Working from images of the ECU pirate, Playwell Bricks’ Eric Dubois Yang designed this custom pirate in the popular Brickheadz™ style.
As a nod to the engineers, this pirate is gripping a wrench and a screwdriver, ready to build or repair. At his side is a treasure chest that may or may not double as a tool chest, and his purple coat mimics the gown worn at ECU’s graduation ceremonies.
The use of the ECU logo is heavily restricted, so while the ECU team worked to get permissions for Playwell Bricks to include it on both the pirate’s hat and the set’s packaging for their gifts, the pirate shown in photos here on the Playwell website does not include those decals.
