How this Pirate Set Celebrates 20 Years of Engineering
Introduction
2026 marked the 20th of the Department of Engineering at the East Carolina University (ECU) College of Engineering and Technology. As part of the celebration event, the client contacted Playwell Bricks to commission a special gift to be given out to the celebrants.
The Challenge
Playwell’s contact at ECU explained that the university’s athletic teams were nicknamed the Pirates, so a custom design based on a pirate, but that could also include elements unique to engineering, would be ideal.
The Solution
Using ECU’s school colours, purple and gold, Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang created a pirate character in the popular Brickheadz™ style. He included the ECU logo (not shown in the photos due to permissions) on the front of the pirate’s hat and designed the jacket of the pirate to mimic ECU’s purple graduation gown.
As a nod to engineers, the pirate is clutching a wrench and a screwdriver in his fists, as if he’s about to get to building or repairing as soon as he’s built. Beside him, on a platform of purple and gold, sits a classic pirate’s treasure chest. Or is it a tool chest?
The Result
This thoughtfully designed, custom pirate set allows ECU to give the celebrants attending the 20th-anniversary event for the Department of Engineering a fully branded gift that brings joy to their brand. With nods to graduation and engineering, this gift becomes more meaningful as the celebrants engage with and build their pirate.
