Cummings Electrical wanted a way to thank valued clients while keeping their expertise and products top of mind. To achieve this, they envisioned a custom gift that was both memorable and meaningful that would reflect their innovation and craftsmanship in a tangible form. When they reached out to Playwell Bricks, the idea of transforming their Modular Electrical Room (MER) into a custom brick build quickly came to life.
the challenge
Cummings Electrical’s Modular Electrical Rooms are pre-built units that contain all the essential wiring and equipment to power data centers and large facilities. Compact, efficient, and vital to modern infrastructure, these rooms are a hallmark of the company’s engineering skill. The challenge was to recreate this complex structure at a small scale and make it interactive enough to spark curiosity while remaining faithful to the original design.
the solution
Playwell Bricks designer James May began by studying two architectural schematics provided by the Cummings team. His first prototype captured the MER’s essential form, serving as a starting point for collaboration.
After receiving enthusiastic feedback and some inspired suggestions from the client James refined the model further. Could the roof slide off? Could the room open? These ideas led to an innovative hinge design, allowing the set to open like a miniature dollhouse to reveal the interior details within.
Once the design was finalized, Playwell Bricks handled production and delivered 500 custom sets, each one a conversation piece designed to delight recipients and strengthen client relationships.
