There is something magical about having one’s home captured in bricks. It’s a bit like reaching back through time to the kid with a handful of bricks you used to be, imagining what your house would look like someday, trying to build it. For the Cohen family, this magic was finally coming home.

Mrs. Cohen commissioned this set for their brick-loving husband, letting the team know what size she wanted and providing photos of both the interior and exterior to work from. Playwell Bricks designer Tim Howell studied these photos before bringing them to life.

“The design of the actual house is very rectangular and blocky. It might even seem repetitious at first, but in reality, there is a wide variety of elements to it,” Tim explained. “The fun challenge was to replicate that design as close as possible at small scale while still including many recognizable details.”

The family didn’t just want the exterior details of their house recreated in bricks, but the interior as well. Stickers were created to match the family’s artwork, affixed to blocks to match their actual location in the house.

“There are some interior details that were interesting to do,” says Tim. “For instance, the bookshelves in the library are made from small panels that are connected to the wall behind, not built up from the floor.”

Tim tells me he used to work as an architect and a home inspector. “I always enjoy looking at houses and buildings. It was particularly enjoyable for me to be able to create this model that the family will look at and treasure for many, many years.”
