The Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences is a West Virginia facility dedicated to science, the fine arts, performing arts, and education. The Center hosts a planetarium, exhibition hall, art museum, and a science museum all in one facility. The only thing they were missing was a few bricks.
A Wonder Passport
Playwell’s contact from the Clay Center explained that the Center was offering a passport program during the winter holidays. Named the “Wonder Season Passport,” Center patrons would receive a stamp for every event attended between specific dates in November and December. Once these patrons gathered eight stamps, they would achieve the grand prize, which was why the Clay Center had reached out to Playwell Bricks.
Their vision for this grand prize was a custom brick set that represented West Virginia. They pictured something in the shape of the state on a map, brought into three dimensions by adding representative elements on top of that map shape.
West Virginia in Bricks
The Playwell Bricks team member who designed this set got to work, sending out an initial concept to make sure they were on the same page as the client. This set featured the West Virginia map shape as the base, while waterfalls, yellow flowers, and a bear were built on top.
The client liked the concept, but with a few changes. They pointed out that West Virginia is know as the Mountain State, so they’d prefer to have the waterfall begin halfway up a mountain, with a few other mountains too, if possible.
Likewise, the client requested that the yellow flowers be swapped out for pink so they could be representative of West Virginia’s state flower, the rhododendron.
After a few final tweaks to the bear and a decal reading “The Clay Center,” this custom Playwell Bricks set was approved for production. 250 sets were soon delivered to West Virginia’s most loyal Clay Center patrons.
